When you think of classes for expectant parents, childbirth or lamaze classes probably come to mind first. But there are lots of other prenatal courses that may be helpful. According to BabyCenter.com[1] , prenatal yoga classes can help keep your body limber, tones your muscles, improve your balance and circulation, and help you learn how to breathe deeply and relax. Some yoga centers, like Yoga Garden, claim that yoga can also help strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles, aid digestion, exercise the spinal column, relieve fatigue and tension and revitalize the internal organs, while also alleviating pregnancy-related nausea, constipation, varicose veins, swelling, back pain and sciatica.Discovery Health says similar benefits can be achieved through Hypnobirthing?, which is the use of hypnosis to achieve maximum relaxation, comfort, and relief during childbirth.
Typical costs:
Prenatal yoga classes (and postpartum classes as well) range from as little as $12 per class to $25 per class.
Hypnobirthing classes cost between $40 and $79 for a 2 or 2-1/2 hour class.
Prenatal yoga classes, particularly beginners' classes, should include use of a yoga mat, unless otherwise stated during sign-up.
Hypnobirthing classes should include the instruction, plus the official Hypnybirthing book, CD and handouts.
Additional costs:
Make-up classes may incur additional costs, usually between $25 and $50 per class.
Both prenatal yoga and Hypnobirthing classes may require a deposit, ranging from the cost of one class or $100.
Discounts:
Prenatal yoga classes are often offered in packages of 4, 8 or 16 weeks, which typically cost less than paying the drop-in class fee. Some yoga studios offer monthly packages, with unlimited classes, which offer the best prices. The different ranges from a few dollars to about $10 per class.
Shopping for prenatal classes:
Be sure to ask about refund policies, as well as credit or make-ups in case of missed classes due to illness, emergencies or other cancellations. In many cases, credit for unused classes may be forfeited if not used within a certain time period, typically within one year.
HypnoBirthing? is a trade name for the copyrighted program, so instructors must be certified and affiliated with the HypnoBirthing Institute.
Discovery Health suggests asking your obstetrician for a referral to a trained hypnotherapist, and if you find one, make sure to ask for referrals.
